Photo Resolution

Despite my lack of updates, I was busy taking lots of classes at the end of the year. I had a class in printmaking, two in enameling, and one more in glass. I’m sure I’ll post more about those soon, but to be honest, it was an intense stretch of time to absorb so many new techniques. By the time the holidays rolled around, I needed a reset.

So, it’s a little weird to admit that I’m kicking off the new year by taking up yet another art form - Photography!

Photography’s not exactly “new” to me- I’ve even taking a bunch of photo classes in college- but up until now, my relationship with the camera has been casual. I’ve never really considered photography part of my artistic toolbox. I just took “snapshots”, really…

I’ve only owned modest little digital cameras. My first, a compact and beautiful little Olympus EP-1 , was as much of an accessory as a camera, but it made taking pictures fun. My second, the Samsung NX500, wasn’t any bigger, but packed a punch for its size and price. It might not have been “professional grade”, but that little Samsung was such little powerhouse!

I mean, look at these!

Snapshots or not, I was able to wring some quality out of that little camera. Nevertheless, I could feel myself bumping up against its limits, and it felt like time to upgrade into something I could grow with into the next level… something a little more professional.

So, after a good couple of months of obsessive research, I finally plunked down money on first “real” camera, the new Sony a7iv.

It’s not as big a jump in resolution as I’d have liked (I’ve gone from 28 megapixels to 33), but it feels like a Ferrari in autofocus and overall performance. And even if it’s not a leap in pixel count, the ability to play with quality lenses should make a huge difference to overall sharpness. Not to mention, it has some pretty amazing pro-level video capabilities that I can bring into my Limerence project. I’ve only taken it out a couple times so far, but I’m really excited about the possibilities!

In other words, my New Year’s resolution is to up my photography game. Look for more, soon!
