The Story of Limerence So Far

This is the wall behind my computer, an outline of my Limerence video installation series. These cards have been up there for years now, having faded somewhat over time. Needless to say, Limerence has been a long-term project, one which keeps evolving.

If you’re learning about it for the first time, Limerence is planned to be a set of eleven abstract video compositions projected onto sculptural screens. Think of them as sort of like Disney’s Fantasia, but without the music.

I’ve created a video sketch of every piece by now, although for the last two years, I’ve focused on building the the final installation for “A Prayer…”, the second piece in the series (represented by the yellow triangle.). It’s the most optimistic entry in a personal body of work filled with some really tough emotions. Limerence can be difficult for me to sit with sometimes, but Prayer is an incantation for peace, love, success, and hope. Knowing that I would be spending a so much time and mental energy on building it, it felt like the best option to officially kick off the series.

Making Prayer has been challenging enough that I sometimes wonder if have the stamina to finish all eleven entries. Even though I have this road map ahead of me, I’ve learned to take its creation one milestone at a time. The series is meant to be tied together, but each piece must also stand on its own. It might take me a decade to finish the whole lot, and to think of that sort of time scale can be too overwhelming.

First, I’ll finish Prayer. I’m well within reach of that.
